Famous for its amazing architecture, the Bhuvaneswari temple is located at an ideal location on the bank of river Gomati at Udaipur in Tripura. Udaipur is known as the “Temple town of Tripura”. It is situated 55 km from the capital city Agartala. The temple was constructed in the 17th century by Maharaja Govinda Manikya. The Royal palace of the Maharaja can also be visited when you pay a visit to this temple as it is located near the temple.

The presiding deity of the temple is goddess Kali. The temple houses two identical images of the same deity named Chhotima. One is 2 feet in height and is called 'Chhotima' and the other is 5 feet tall and is called 'Tripura Sundari'. The image of Chhotima is almost in ruins. One can hardly figure out the attributes in her hands. The shape of the temple complex resembles that of a Kurma, meaning tortoise and hence the temple is also known as 'Kurma Pitha'. It also houses an idol of Ma Kali which is made of reddish black Kasti pathar. Another idol of Ma Kali present here is called 'Chotti Maa'. Maharajas of Tripura used to carry this small idol with them on their hunting expedition and also during war.

The rich heritage of Tripura vividly reflects in its temples like Kamlasagar Kali. Besides being a known temple, Kamalasagar Kali Temple also attracts tourists because of its natural beauty. It is also know as Kasba Kali Bari temple. It is located on a hillock overlooking a beautiful lake named Kamala Sagar. The lake at the border of Bangladesh offers wonderful views of its surroundings and is often flocked by the local people for picnic. This huge lake was made by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya Bahadur in the late 15th century.
